Karena ibunya amat memperhatikan kelanjutan pendidikannya, Obama kemudian tinggal bersama neneknya di Hawaii dan mengahbiskan masa remajanya di sana. Selanjutnya ia masuk Universitas Columbia, dan setelah lulus sempat bekerja di bursa saham di Wall Street. Aktivitas sosial Obama dimuali di Chicago dan kemudia melanjutklan studi di Harvard Law School di Boston.
Tahun 2005 Obama terpilih sebagai senator di tingkat federal mewakili Negara Bagian illionois yang berkedudukan di Capitol Hill, Washingtong DC.
Obama menikah dengan Michelle pada usia 35 tahun dan sekarang dikaruniai dua orang putri, Sasha dan Malia. Mereka bertemu di sebuah firma hukum dimana di situ Obama masuk sebagai seorang junior.
